What is the BIG deal with the Flip?

flip_mino I am still trying to figure out what the BIG deal is with The Flip video camera.  Who in their right mind is going to pay $179.99 for a device that produces crappy video and has no expandable memory?!  I certainly am not going to be swayed to buy junk just because iJustine uses one.

I have a SONY Cybershot DSC-P200 camera that has video mode.  I carry my camera with me just about everywhere and I get better video and can store more of it.  Oh yeah, did I mention that it has a ZEISS lens and 7.2 megapixels?

I really want to know why this little point-and-shoot video only device has everyone wanting one?  Seriously!

Do you own a Flip video camera?  Tell me why you purchased this piece of junk, I am curious about this.

I don’t mean to bash this thing, but $179.99 for low quality video?  My camera only cost around $200 and I can do more with it!

Cheers!

Jacob, you are the first person to offer a contrary view of the Flip. I had actually planned on buying one. I don’t have a camera either but it would be appealing to have same video quality and camera in one device for the same price. I was attracted by the quality I had seen, the ease of use, and portability. It would be great to see a video from your camera for the sake of comparison. Hmm, thanks for offering a different opinion on this, always nice to get the other side.

If you have an old digital camera that records video at 640×480 or higher you have a flip and it (chances are) can be expanded with an SD card. You could probably get a cheap $100 digital camera that takes decent pictures and video at the same quality as the flip. The only thing you’d be missing with the digital camera is the software that you get with the flip, but most people who have the flip don’t use it anyway.

The video is jerky as well as the audio. The video format is MPEG4 which is a convenient file type and looks good when first recorded but deteriorates quickly. About two minutes into a video the playback “sticks” or “jerks” and is very annoying. Most disappointing. I personally think all video cameras are crappy. None have a decent quality and each one has a video format that is never compatible with what you want to do with it. People buy this junk and then tinker with it and finally throw it away. These companies should be run out of business. Read the blogs before you buy!
