Craigslist MacBook Pro Scam

Yesterday I heard back from the seller about the MacBook Pro I found on Craigslist.  I was really hoping that it was a local person selling an MBP at a low price.  Well, turns out the the whole thing is a scam.  It was hard to believe at first, considering the ad said that the product was in Elmira.  I was really hoping to get this so that Albert could retire his 7 year old PowerBook.  I guess things are just too good to be true.  The “seller” and I have been emailing back and forth.  She was willing to take care of the shipping costs (she has moved to Manchester, UK now) via DHL and then I would pay her after receiving the MBP and verifying that it works.

I got curious, so I plugged her email [amy28.1979@hotmail.com] into Google and got two hits from blogs about MacBook scams on Craigslist.  I am glad that I did.  So now I am just leaving the situation as is.  If she emails me back, I may see where it goes.  But I am now certain that I am getting played and I am not happy at all.

Albert, sorry that I could not get you a MacBook at the incredible price of $640.00 – Craigslist is just a cespool of scams.

Once I heard she was in England and she's using the name of a rather famous artist from there, I knew it was too good to be true. You win some, you lose some, but we're here to fight another day!     The laptop has the Snow Leopard 10.6 OS, the iLife 09 and the MS Office 2008 with the original recovery disks included.
    One more thing, the laptop is an US version and it works on the US power and plug system so you do not need a converter to use it in the US.

    The interesting thing… The address from the previous post at 153 Barlow Moor Road, comes back to the Education Section of the Consulate General of the Peoples Republic of China in Manchester.

    I just found the same scam, being run by someone calling herself Ashley Morgan (ashley.morgan29@hotmail.com). As soon as I discovered the laptop was now in the UK rather than in Indiana, where I found the Craigslist listing, I plugged the body of the email into Google. And here I am! Here's the email I received:

    I got the same exact message for two accounts I emailed her from….That's how I check I email with two accounts one seeming a rookie and the other an expert buyer…when they go for the rookie it is a scam…more obviously if they mail the same exact wording for both…and today she told me that she would get things ready for shipping. I just wish I could get that laptop without paying her. but that laptop doesn't exist. I want to scam her….anyways im in phoenix

    so ive been in conversation for a 13″ macbook pro for a very low $400. i couldnt believe it but i thought id test the waters and see how legitimate it was.

    from and Ashley Morgan claiming to be out of Portland NH, not far from my home… moved to UK and the rest is obvious.

    we spoke a little, until after i started mentioning i wanted to call her and noticed she dodged my question, but updated her email with a new signature, featuring her name, an airline company name and an address.

    oh and another thing to pay attention to that i also noticed, the first email was written in a different font and size as the second one, and the next had a new signature… anyone who really uses an email doesnt need to constantly change these settings.

    I experince this scam on craigslist. I also got this scam on Amazon.com. A new seller will sell a cheap macbook pro real cheap then back out (In my case). The seller will say he has only one unit. Then he will ask for your shipping so amazon can send you a email to intiate purchase. The email goes straight to bulk mail. He wants you to send him money via moneygram. Guess where guys??? TO ROMANIA…wow good scam. Clear indicator if nothing else does. It makes you disappointed but most of the time if its too good to be true….it is. sadly

    same scam here in georgia and there is another one that goes by the name of arianne dresser from united kingdom as well using a tnt shipping scam! this is rediculous and i hope this person gets caught or someone gets pissed enough to go beat the shit out of her/him. funny how i got the same reply from two different ads with two different names thats what set me off to start checking into it. thanks and dont ever ever ever buy something you cant see first hand from craigslist!

    Well, with so many complains I am surprised that neither policy nor craiglist do something about this. Anyway, I do not think Laura Hilton is actually selling the laptop. It's reasonable to assume that the person who *gets the money* is actual crook. In the instructions sent to me from “tnt”, the name of the person who should receive money was “Sarah Taylor”. I believe only Sarah Taylor is eligible to grab the money and run. Nature of western union does not allow to track her. My attempt to convince “Laura” for PayPal money request left without answer… I am wondering if that Sarah Taylor is actually doing living from this scam? I can imagine that only small percentage of people who caught this scam became suspicious about it. It is not easy to catch… Anyway, anybody from policy out there or crooks will abuse Internet and enjoy freedom forever? I think this list is sufficient evidence to ask “Sarah Taylor” few questions…
